Italian Parliament's Majority Declares Unequivocal Support
for NCR and Its President-elect for Future Iran, Maryam
Rajavi, Excerpts from a statement issued by the NCR - Paris,
May 24

        An all-party delegation of prominent members of the
Italian Parliament ... and the representative of the National
Council of Resistance in Italy, held a press conference,
Wednesday, May 24, 1995, and presented a joint statement
signed for the first time by the majority of representatives
from all the Italian parliamentary groups.
        ... They emphasized in their statement: "In our view, the
policy of appeasing the mullahs, under whatever pretext, is
futile. Indeed the time has come for the adoption of a firm,
practical policy vis-à-vis the Iranian regime. We believe that
supporting the aspirations of the Iranian people, now
represented by the National Council of Resistance and
President Maryam Rajavi, will expedite the establishment of
democracy in Iran and contribute to the restoration of
stability in the region."...
        ... The representatives emphasized the need to
reexamine previous policies towards the mullahs' regime and
devise new policies towards its democratic alternative, the
National Council of Resistance of Iran....


Iran Opposition Says Most Italian MPs Back It, Reuters, May
24

        ROME - Iran's main opposition movement said on
Wednesday that it had won support from a majority of
members of Italy's lower house of parliament for
international action against the Tehran government.
        The Mujahideen Khalq/National Council of Resistance
(NCR) published a declaration it said had been signed by 317
of the 630 members of the Chamber of Deputies.
        Among signatories were the leaders of four major
political parties....
        "We believe that the policy of compromise with the
Iranian regime for whatever reason has terrible results. It is
really time to take a firm position towards the Iranian
regime," the declaration said.
        Expressing support for the NCR it added: "The Security
Council of the United Nations must take adequate measures in
response to continued violations of human rights in Iran."...
        They urged Italy, which has substantial trade links with
Iran, to drop its opposition to following U.S. President Bill
Clinton's call for a trade and investment embargo with Iran....


Rabin Asks Russian Restraint on Iran, United Press
International, May 24

        JERUSALEM - ... Russia will, however, proceed with
plans to build a nuclear reactor for civilian use in Iran, the
Israeli officials quoted [Russian Deputy Foreign Minister
Victor] Posvalyuk as saying.
        Israeli leaders consider Iran their arch rival in the
region and a formidable potential opponent in war. They
blame Tehran for providing funding and ideological support
for suicide attacks against Israeli targets in Lebanon, the West
Bank and Gaza Strip.
        "The prime minister described to his guest Iran's role in
promoting and pushing forward terrorism, including by
remote control in the territories,"  said Rabin's spokeswoman,
Aliza Goren....


Iran Ends War Games, Associated Press, May 24

        NICOSIA - Iranian armed forces wrapped up three days
of exercises in southern Iran Wednesday, Tehran Radio
reported.
        The broadcast, monitored in Cyprus, said  "anti-aircraft
guns, rockets, tanks, armored personnel carriers and other
advanced weapons"  were deployed in the war games....
