BRIEF ON IRAN, No. 214 Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran Friday, July 21, 1995 3421 M Street NW #1032, Washington, DC 20007 Iran Reportedly Seeking Arms from Belarus, Los Angeles Times, July 20 MOSCOW - Less than a month after Moscow bowed to U.S. pressure and pledged to end conventional arms deliveries to Iran, Belarus id negotiating weapons sales to the Islamic republic, Western diplomats in Minsk confirmed Wednesday. Belarussian officials denied any arms sale.... But the diplomats, as well as Russian , Belarussian and Western press reports, say Belarus is discussing sales of weapons and spare parts to Iran.... Ukraine, which also has key factories from the former Soviet military complex, also reportedly has been talking to Iran about possible weapons sales.... Apparently seeking an alternative supplier, Iranian First Vice President Hassan Habibi traveled to Minsk last week and announced Friday that Iran "will buy conventional defensive weapons and hold consultations on some technological processes" with Belarus.... Nevertheless, in telephone interviews, Belarussian officials denied that a weapons deal had been struck.... But numerous local press reports said a protocol on arms sales and military cooperation between Belarus and Iran was signed after Habibi's meeting with Belarussian Prime Minister Mikhail Chigir.... The arms sale appears to be contingent on the Iranians coming up with either hard currency or a way to transport their oil to Belarus to pay for their purchases. Christian Priests Killed at Government Hands, Evangelist Today, July 1995 Following the report "Iran 1994: The Year of Assassinations" produced by Middle East Concern, which maintains a presence in the Middle East and represents several agencies advocating the human rights of religious minorities, Jubilee Campaign called a meeting in the House of Commons on June 15, chaired by Anthony Coombs MP. The report contains new evidence that reinforces the belief that the Iranian government was responsible for the assassination of three Christian leaders in that country. It also states that sources with access to high- level government contacts specifically confirm the existence of a "hit list" containing the names of prominent Christians. Wilfred Wong, parliamentary officer for British human rights group Jubilee Campaign, was calling for tougher economic and political sanctions against Iran, similar to those imposed by the USA. Mullahs Support Terrorism and Fundamentalism in Sudan, Agence France Presse, July 19 The Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Yousef Vallie accused Iran of financing the armed fundamentalists based in Sudan. Middle East News Agency quoted Mr. Vallie as saying that: "The people of Sudan and Egypt are brothers; however, there exists a problem between Egypt and the Sudanese leaders who dedicate their efforts in support of terrorism and establishment of training camps for terrorists who are being financed by the Iranian government.... S. Africa Says It Has Oil Storage Accord with Iran, Reuters, July 20 JOHANNESBURG - South Africa said on Thursday it would provide Iran with Atlantic coast oil storage facilities in a move which could upset the United States. A statement from Kobus van Zyl, managing director of the Central Energy Fund which manages South Africa's strategic oil stocks, said 15 million barrels of oil would be stored at Saldhana Bay 150 km (95 miles) north of Cape Town.... "The storage of Iranian oil is not intended to contravene U.S. sanctions against Iran," the statement said. "The U.S. sanctions simply prevent American companies and their subsidiaries from trading with (Iran)." Van Zyl said Iran needed the storage facilities at least partly because of the U.S. sanctions. "The Iranians lost customers after the U.S. sanctions were imposed," he said. "They will have crude oil cargoes available for which they don't have customers."
