BRIEF ON IRAN,No. 254 Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran Monday, September 18, 1995 3421 M Street NW #1032, Washington, DC 20007 Air Force Major Refuses to Return Home, Defects to Iranian Resistance, from a statement by the Secretariat of the NCR - Paris, Sept. 15 Rome, Italy - Major Nasser Akbari, an Iranian Air Force officer, sent a letter today to Mr. Massoud Rajavi, President of the National Council of Resistance, and announced his support for the Council. Major Akbari who refused to return to Iran, was a member of the Armed Forces' Shooting Team as well as the Iranian national team, who came to Italy to participate in the first Olympics of the World's Armies (CSIM). The Olympics began on September 5. In his letter to Mr. Rajavi, Nasser Akbari wrote: "Today the crimes of the mullahs' regime and the repression prevailing Iran is so much that any form of silence against the ruthless rulers contradicts humanity and patriotism. Any other solution but full fledged struggle against this inhuman regime is inconceivable." "The majority of the honorable people of Iran are impatiently counting the days for the overthrow of this regime, particularly after the election of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi as Iran's future President," Major Akbari said in his letter. Major Akbari is married with two children. The National Council of Resistance is a coalition of democratic Iranian opposition groups who strive to replace the mullahs' regime with a pluralist government. The NCR acts as the Resistance's parliament. In an early August session this year, the Council increased the number of its committees to 25. The NCR committees are the bases of the future coalition government. Congressional Panels Probe Use of U.S. Data in Russia-Iran Deal, The Washington Times, September 15 The House and Senate intelligence oversight committees are investigating whether secret U.S. data supplied to Moscow on Iran's nuclear program has been compromised, after disclosure of new links between the Russian and Iranian spy services. CIA Director John Deutch said after a speech to the National Press Club on Tuesday that he is concerned about Russian intelligence training provided to five agents of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). He did not elaborate.... The links have raised concerns about growing relations between Russia and Iran, especially Russian support for MOIS agents, who have been tied to international terrorist groups.... Algeria Accuses Tehran of Terrorist Activities, Associated Press, September 16 NICOSIA, Cyprus-... Algerian Prime Minister Mokdad Sifi was quoted Thursday by the London-based, Arabic-language al-Quds al-Arabi daily as saying that behind the militants' ``knives the shadows of Tehran's mullahs are seen as well as the shadows of the swindlers of Khartoum's preachers.'' The Algerian government has in the past accused Iran and Sudan, both ruled by Islamic governments, of supporting militants fighting to topple it. At least 30,000 people have been killed in political violence in Algeria since January 1992, when the army- backed authorities canceled general elections which the fundamentalist Islamic Salvation Front was poised to win.... Iran Cleric Urges Mass Action Against "Immorality", Reuters, September 15 TEHRAN - A senior Iranian cleric on Friday urged Moslem militants to organize mass actions, such as blocking traffic, to enforce Islamic rules of clothing and behavior. "If people see a newlyweds' car...and the situation does not fit moral...and religious norms, what is wrong if a few young Hizbollah members...stand in front of it and block it?" Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said in a mass prayer sermon broadcast on state-run Tehran radio. Jannati, who is well known for his fiery rhetoric, was referring to some brides who appear in public in western-style bridal gowns.... "Just like when some people block roads for their material demands...people should block traffic for legitimate goals," Jannati said.... Jannati, a member of the Guardian Council which has veto right over parliament, in August supported an arson attack on the offices of the publishers of a novel accused of immorality. Hizbollah groups have increased their activity in the past few weeks....
