BRIEF ON IRAN No. 361 Monday, March 4, 1996 Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran 3421 M Street NW #1032 Washington, DC 20007 Iranian Resistance Condemns the Bombing And Killing of Innocent People in Jerusalem, from a statement by NCR, March 3 The National Council of Resistance of Iran strongly condemns today's explosion in Jerusalem which left scores killed or wounded and extends condolences to the families of the victims. Such terrorist crimes are only desirable for the religious, terrorist dictatorship ruling Iran which is the principal enemy of peace in the Middle East and the fountainhead of exporting fundamentalism and terrorism. The Khomeini regime's radio, television and print media welcomed last Sunday's explosion in Jerusalem. Only three days after, on Wednesday, February 28, Hassan Habibi, Rafsanjani's first deputy, and Ali Akbar Velayati, the mullahs' foreign minister, met a number of groups in the region, who are the enemies of the peace process, and stressed upon the clerical regime's support for them and such terrorist acts. Mullahs and Their Agents Laud Jerusalem Bombing, Reuters, March 3 JERUSALEM - ...Iran, accused by Israel and the United States of funding the suicide bombers, said the bombings proved the power of Islamist Palestinian groups and showed Israel had failed in achieving its goals in making peace with Arafat. "The intensification of the operations by anti-Zionist Palestinian groups and efforts by the Zionist regime to offset them have destabilized the process of collusion," state-run Tehran Radio said in a commentary.... In Lebanon, pro-Iranian Hizbollah said "murder and gunpowder" were the only language Israel understood. Tehran Tries to Strengthen Its Influence in Bosnia, The New York Times, March 3 The Bosnian Government has sent soldiers to Iran for training as part of an effort to revamp its military, senior Western and Bosnian Government officials say. Two Bosnian officials who confirmed the training but who spoke on condition of anonymity refused to say how many Bosnian troops were in Iran or when they had arrived. But European countries with embassies in Iran say there are probably "a few hundred" Bosnians who are being trained or have recently been trained in light-infantry tactics. "Our Foreign Ministry has received steady reports of Bosnians going to Iran for training," said a senior European military officer who spoke on the condition that he and the country he represents not be identified, "but we do not have any precise numbers." "What we worry about," the officer continued, "is not the level of military expertise that will be achieved in Iran by these Bosnians, but the indoctrination of Islamic ideology that is also part of any training program." The training combined with the presence of 150 to 200 Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Bosnia in violation of the Balkan peace accord, is likely to anger and alarm Bosnia's Western backers and underscores the efforts of Iran's militant Islamic Government to forge close ties to the Muslim-led Bosnian Government.... NATO troops recently uncovered what they called a training center outside Sarajevo run by Iranians that contained material for classes in bomb-making and kidnapping. The Iranians were expelled from Bosnia after the NATO raid, though the Bosnian Government said the center was in fact an anti-terrorist cell. Iran and militant Islamic groups run some four dozen Islamic charities in Bosnia. NATO officials contend that the charities are used as a cover to bring in military equipment and soldiers.... The Iranians hope to gain influence in the Bosnian military, NATO officials say, and have begun a concerted effort to assist the careers of senior Bosnian commanders who are sympathetic to their brand of militant Islam, the NATO officials said....
