Jordanian security and government officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, told United Press International a large but unspecified number of suspects have been arrested in these attempted attacks.... [A security] source did not identify the groups to which the suspects are thought to belong, but did say the suspects belong to "small groups, not the big militant groups known to carry out attacks".... A Jordanian official said terrorist attempts began soon after Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty on Oct. 26, 1994, ending more than 45 years of hostilities, but the number of planned attacks had increased in recent months.... Bahrain Arrests 44 over Tehran Plot, Reuter Reports, June 4 Bahrain on Tuesday announced the arrest of 44 people in connection with an alleged pro-Iranian plot to overthrow the government, and the Shura consultative council voiced support for all steps to preserve security. Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Khalifa al- Khalifa told the Shura that 34 suspects had already confessed before an investigating judge and the others were still being questioned, the official Gulf News Agency (GNA) reported.... The island's rulers received telephone calls from leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait condemning alleged Iranian interference in its internal affairs and pledging full support.... The United States on Tuesday expressed support for Bahrain and said it took seriously allegations that Iranian- backed militants had tried to overthrow the government of the Gulf sheikhhdom.... State Department spokesman Glyn Davies said Washington took the Bahrain government's allegations "very, very seriously." "Iran's involvement with terrorist activities in the region is well-known, and of course, it's also well-known that they've established links with oppositionist parties in Bahrain," Davies told a news briefing.... "We would view with great concern any external effort to destabilize that government or to compromise its economic and social development, and as importantly, its recently announced political reform." [In a statement issued Tuesday, the National Council of Resistance of Iran said that Mr. Massoud Rajavi, President of the NCR, condemned the terrorist conspiracies and meddling of mullahs' religious, terrorist dictatorship in Bahrain.] France Issues Arrest Warrant For Iranian, United Press, June 4 Authorities issued an international arrest warrant Tuesday for an Iranian man arrested last week by German police in connection with the killing of a former Iranian Cabinet minister, judicial sources said. Reza Mazlouman ... was found dead at his Paris apartment on May 28 with bullet wounds to the head and chest. On Thursday, police in Bonn arrested Harmad Jeyhouni, who told German authorities he visited Mazlouman shortly before his body had been found, but denied killing him, judicial sources said. Police are also looking for another suspect who had been with Jeyhouni at Mazlouman's apartment, the sources said.... The opposition National Iranian Resistance Council last week implied that the Tehran government was behind his killing, saying "the religious and terrorist authorities in Iran...commit such crimes to cover their problems."... Rafsanjani's Absence, Radio Israel, June 3 According to foreign reporters in Tehran, when Khamenei went to the podium today at Khomeini's grave to give a speech, he was accompanied by Majlis speaker, Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri and Rafsanjani was not with them. The experts described Rafsanjani's absence as another proof of Khamenei's comprehensive support for Nateq-Nouri, who belongs to the traditional right wing and is against any tendency toward modernization in Iran. Iran Enters Oil Deal, Europeans Laud, US Objects, Reuters, June 4 Iran stormed into the Caspian Sea oil world on Tuesday by taking a stake in a multi-billion dollar project.... While the European oil companies in the $4.1 billion deal lauded the inclusion of Iran, some U.S. government officials have said that they are not pleased. "The U.S. position is well-known," said a Western energy official in a recent interview on the subject. "We do not want to see Iran in any of these projects because of its record on terrorism."
