The legislation is backed by the administration but has drawn criticism from European countries... The bill, passed 415-0, lists six possible sanctions options against Iran and requires the president to impose at least two on any person or business that invests $40 million or more in one year in Iran's energy sector. The Senate passed a similar bill last December... "This bill, in short, will require foreign companies to choose between investing in our market or those of Iran and Libya," said Rep. Benjamin Gilman, R-N.Y., chairman of the House International Relations Committee.... "We've said in the past that we could support it," State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said. "We think it's very important to isolate Iran economically, and here we have a difference of opinion with some of our allies in Europe."... Iranian Resistance Lauds House Sanctions Against Mullahs, The Iran Zamin News Agency, June 19 A statement issued today by the National Council of Resistance of Iran said that Mr. Massoud Rajavi, President of the NCR sent a telegram to House Speaker Newt Gingrich, congratulating him on this courageous initiative. He described the U.S. representatives' unprecedented consensus as indicative of the lack of legitimacy of the mullahs' religious, terrorist dictatorship. Mr. Rajavi stressed that: "Though it is very necessary to exercise decisiveness against this regime, experience has shown that the recognition of the Iranian people's just Resistance against the Khomeini regime is an inevitable precondition for the establishment of democracy in Iran and tranquillity in the region. This Resistance and its President-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, enjoy the support of the greater majority of the Iranian people." Household Appliances Price Hike, Radio Israel, June 18 Today, Tehran newspapers wrote about the sharp increase in the price of household appliances produced inside the country and reported that the price of these products has risen by 60%.... The price hike occurs at a time when, earlier this year, the industry executives had indicated a decrease in the prices due to increase in production of the household appliances. Fatal Accidents in Iran, Agence France Presse, June 18 In two separate accidents involving two trucks and two passenger buses in the Torbat-Heidariyeh region of Khorasan province, 29 people lost their lives. Both accidents occurred in head-on collisions while the trucks were passing other automobiles on their left. Each year more than 30,000 accidents are reported in Iran which results in the death of 3,000 people. The adverse conditions of the roads in Iran and human error are considered the main cause of the accidents.
