BRIEF ON IRAN No. 445 Monday July 1, 1996 Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran 3421 M Street NW #1032 Washington, DC 20007 Ayatollah Calls Bomb Blast "Revolutionary" Move, Reuters, June 28 Iran's top Judge On Friday Blamed The U.S. Military Presence In The Gulf For The Bomb Blast In Saudi Arabia That killed 19 Americans.... "Wherever there is any incident caused by any revolutionary movement, immediately they accuse Iran,'' Yazdi [head of mullahs' judiciary.... said in Fridays prayer sermon] "If you were to think logically, it is your (U.S.) military presence in this region, for which you have no reason, and your hegemonistic claims which are to be blamed...The people cannot tolerate your military presence in this region,'' Yazdi said.... Mullahs' Regime Executes Three Political Prisoners, from statement by NCR, June 28 Reports from Iran say that Khomeini's anti-human regime executed Ahmad Bakhtari, an activist belonging to the Organization of the People's Feda'ii Guerrillas and two other political prisoners on June 22 in Evin Prison in Tehran.... Iranian Asylum-seekers in Turkey in Danger, Iran Zamin News Agency, June 29 Reports from Turkey say that Thursday night more than 60 Iranian asylum-seekers, including a number of women and children, who had staged a sit-in at the Office of Turkey's Socialist Party, were arrested by Turkish police. Two days before the transfer, the building's electricity and telephone line had been cut off. In an statement by NCR, the Iranian Resitance condemned the arrest and persecution of Iranian asylum-seekers in Turkey. News Overview Divergent Policies Toward Iran Plays Only in the Evil Hands of Mullahs The international community now has for several years tried to bring the mullahs' regime back into the civilized world. However, to no avail, all the efforts for "critical dialogue," have only emboldened Tehran's clerics to continue their support for international terrorism and any violent opposition against Middle East peace process. On June 26, "The [British] Parliamentary Human Rights Group published a report on Iran called, 'State of Terror'. It outlines, in grizzly detail, assassinations and human rights breaches which it lays at the door of the fundamentalist regime that took over under the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. It also explains that murder, detention and torture of dissidents have accelerated since Rafsanjani came to power 7 years ago..." [BBC Radio, June 26] To coincide with the report, the British Committee on Iran Freedom held a seminar. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, who addressed a gathering of 25,000 supporters the week before, participated in this seminar. In her speech, "Mrs. Rajavi strongly criticized 'indigent approach' that Europe is following by establishing 'critical dialogue,' with Tehran... She called for 'a decisive response and an international effort against the clerics' regime. For this was the only way to progress and to establish democracy in Iran.'" [Agence France Presse, June 26] On June 29 , Reuters reported from Lyon, France, that "World powers urged Iran on Saturday to end its support for extremist groups seeking to destroy Middle East peace and stop backing threats to the life of British author Salman Rushdie.... However, "despite the attention terrorism has gotten recently by the bombing in Saudi Arabia... and other attacks, this summit's communique was largely a rehashing of a statement adopted at last year's economic summit in Canada." [Associated Press, June 28] The dangers and outcome of this policy on the part of Europeans is described in the following excerpts from the June 27th Washington Post: As seen through American eyes, Iran is a pariah state that sanctions international terrorism, opposes a comprehensive peace in the Middle East and seeks to build a nuclear arsenal.... As seen through German eyes, Iran is indeed misguided and dangerous, if not the monolithic theocracy... Yet.... "The trade debate has taken a really nasty turn in the last several weeks," a U.S. official here said. "The Europeans don't like sanctions, they don't like any of this stuff.... It's the one issue where there's conflict between us and the Germans."... U.S. officials say the government in Tehran is seeking weapons of mass destruction while underwriting terror attacks against Israel and a murderous vendetta against dissident Iranian exiles.... The German federal prosecutor in March issued an arrest warrant for Ali Fallahian, chief of Iran's ministry of intelligence and security.... "We haven't seen any evidence the so-called critical dialogue has moderated Iran's behavior in the world," White House spokesman Michael McCurry said recently. "If anything, Iran continues to be the number one proponent of terrorism."... "We think we could accomplish a lot more in Iran if our partners would join us," a U.S. diplomat said. "There is a danger of Iran playing us off against each other."
