BRIEF ON IRAN Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran No. 460 Tuesday, July 23, 1996 3421 M Street NW #1032, Washington, DC 20007 Iran Exile Opposition Group Says Member Executed, Reuters, July 22 The main exiled Iranian opposition group said on Monday that Iran last month secretly executed one of its members in a Tehran prison. The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR)... said Mujahideen member Merhdad Kalani, 35, was executed secretly in Tehran's Evin prison on June 22.... In a fax sent from its Paris office to an international news agency, NCR said Kalani wrote in a letter smuggled out of jail in March that he had been sentenced to death. He said the sentence followed a trial lasting 20 minutes and he named 11 political prisoners who he said had been secretly executed in the prison, the NCR said.... [NCR issued a statement today saying that: "Reports from Iran say that due to escalating domestic crisis at home and increasing international isolation as well as the expansion of the resistance in and out of Iran, in recent months, Khomeini's anti-human regime has executed large numbers of political prisoners who had been incarcerated for many years."] Executions Rise in Iran, Associated Press, July 22 Three men convicted of murder in separate crimes were hanged at Tehran's Qasr prison, a Farsi-language daily reported Monday. The newspaper, Iran, said they were hanged Sunday at dawn. Judicial hangings in Iran appear to have risen in recent months.... [In a statement issued today, NCR said that claims by Reza Husseini, deputy chief of Tehran's "Islamic revolutionary" courts, indicating that "the number of executions has dropped sharply in recent years" are absolutely false and "only intended to circumvent increasing international pressure for persisting flagrant human rights abuses in Iran. While the total number of announced executions in all of 1995 were 81 cases, in the first six months of 1996, the mullahs have already announced the execution of 70 people." The NCR also said that "the clerical regime has escalated the secret execution of political prisoners.] Iranians Plot Bahrain Strife, Sunday Telegraph, July 21 Iranian-backed Islamic militants are using Britain as a base from which to orchestrate attempts to overthrow Bahrain's ruling family as part of a systematic campaign to destabilize the oil-rich gulf region. Confidential documents acquired by the Sunday Telegraph show that Islamic fundamentalists opposed to Bahrain's Al-Khalifa family have set up a network of offices in north London which they use to co-ordinate their attacks against the emirate's rulers.... ...They are understood to receive their orders direct from Bahraini dissidents based in the Iranian holy city of Qom, a renowned hotbed of Islamic radicalism.... According to Bahraini officials, the campaign is led by a dissident Sheikh, who sought refuge in Iran and is responsible for the estimated 250 Bahrainis resident in Qom. The orders are passed through Dar-Ol-Hekma (Farsi for "the house of science"), located in Qom. The Sheikh is said to be the spiritual head of Hizbollah Bahrain, reputed masterminds of the conspiracy to overthrow the ruling family. The Bahrainis say he mediates between the Iranian authorities and the Bahrainis, most of whom have received training from Iran's revolutionary guards. "The London offices receive their orders from Iran and then pass them on to activists in Bahrain," said a Western intelligence source. The activists then act on the instructions they have received to carry out terrorist attacks."... The Bahraini authorities have regularly accused Iran of responsibility for the wave of disturbances in the emirate over recent months. Last month the Bahrainis claimed a coup when, in effect, a group of dissidents confessed on television to having received training and financial support from Iran.... TWA Bombing, Mullahs' Retaliation against US—Report, Radio Israel, July 21 While investigations by the U.S. security officials about the cause of TWA explosion and the death of all of its 230 passengers is not concluded, the London-based Sunday Times reported in its today's edition that in a contact with the American embassy in Rome, an Iranian citizen with close ties to the Islamic government of Iran disclosed that there was a bomb planted in the American TWA airliner. The Iranian citizen, whose identity is not disclosed, said that the bombing was carried out by agents of the Islamic government of Iran and is the regime's retaliation against the United States....
