But despite the opposition from friendly nations, Clinton declared: "The United States must act," and expressed the hope that "some day soon all countries will come to realize that you can't do business with people by day who are killing your people at night."... Rajavi Hails U.S. Sanctions, Iran Zamin News Agency, August 5 Mr. Massoud Rajavi, President of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, on Monday, hailed President Clinton's signing of the secondary sanctions against mullahs' regime. In a statement issued by the National Council of Resistance of Iran in Paris, Mr. Rajavi emphasized that: "Although exercising decisiveness and imposing trade sanctions against the ruling clerics are quite necessary, but they are in no way sufficient." The NCR President emphasized that "placating policies such as critical dialogue only embolden the regime to expand its export of fundamentalism and terrorism," and "that so long as this regime remained in power, terrorism would not be uprooted." "The time has come for the expulsion of the representatives of Khomeini's illegitimate regime from the United Nations and other forums and the handing over of Iran's seats to the Iranian resistance," Mr. Rajavi added. Gingrich: Get Tough With Iran on Terror, United Press International, August 4 House Speaker Newt Gingrich says if Iran is operating training camps for terrorists, the United States should tell Iran to close the camps or the United States will.... "I think that we should jointly, on a world basis, indicate to Iran that they have to close those camps down," he said.... Mullahs' Leader Admits Isolation by U.S. Efforts, The Washington Times, August 4 TEHRAN — Iran's spiritual leader Saturday lashed out at the United States for launching a "calculated policy" to isolate Iran from the world community. "America and the arrogant world powers, unable to uproot the Islamic Republic, have embarked on a calculated policy to separate governments and nations from the Islamic Republic," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech carried by state media. "In doing so, unfortunately some governments have fallen into this trap and are hostile toward the Islamic Republic instead of attacking America and Israel they attack a sect of Islam," he added.... Mr. Rafsanjani, who spoke briefly before Khamenei, underlined Iran's "resistance" against Washington.... Rafsanjani Says Wrestling Victory Humiliates U.S., Reuters, August 3 Iran's president on Saturday hailed an Iranian wrestler who won a gold medal at the Olympics in Atlanta, saying he had rubbed the United States' nose in the dirt. "The flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran was raised in the house of Satan through the resolve of a pious youth, Rasull Khadem, despite all the mischief by the Americans to prevent this historic event in Atlanta," Rafsanjani said in a speech broadcast by Iranian radio.... Rocket Attack Against Resistance Base, Agence France Presse, August 5 Iranian opposition group accused Iran of launching, on Monday, two rocket attacks against its base in Iraq. According to Farid Soleymani, a Mujahideen Khalq spokesman, two rockets landed in the "residential area" near the military base of Mojahedin Khalq and caused some damages. In a statement, Mojahedin added that after the two rockets were launched, the base guards could determine the launch site and found six other missiles that were equipped with time device. The opposition group assured that all the weapons had been smuggled across the border from Iran in disassembled pieces. The Mojahedin leader, Massoud Rajavi sent a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and members of the Security Council asking them to condemn the attack and to "take action against the terrorist regime in Iran."...
