BRIEF ON IRAN No. 492 Friday, September 6, 1996 Representative Office of The National Council of Resistance of Iran 3421 M Street NW #1032 Washington, DC 20007 New Repressive Measures Under Consideration, Radio Israel, September 4 A deputy of Islamic Majlis [Iran's parliament], announced that a plan for establishing a ministry called Amr-e-be-Ma'arouf va Nahy-as-Monkar [Forbidding Vice and Enjoining Good] has been prepared and is currently under consideration. Hashemi, deputy from city of Qom, commented that the formation of this ministry could counter what he described as "anti-values fueled by the enemies." He added that the ministry would oversee the education of Iranian students in the context of an Islamic society. More Suicides by Youngsters, Iran Zamin News Agency, September 5 According to a report from city of Isfahan [central Iran], an 18-year-old girl committed suicide by throwing herself under a train. She died instantly. There is no information on the cause of her suicide. In recent years, the number of people, particularly young girls, committing suicide and setting themselves afire has increased astronomically in Iran. Confrontation with Revolutionary Guards, Iran Zamin News Agency, September 5 According to a report from Tehran, several people who protested the mistreatment of a young girl by the Revolutionary Guards, have been arrested. Last Tuesday, the regime's agents insulted a young girl because of her clothing. She objected to the guards' behavior and confronted them. Some of the locals clashed with the agents in her support. The guards called for reinforcement and in the skirmishes which followed, the girl and a number of her backers were beaten up and arrested. Government Fails to Repay Compensations - People Protest, Iran Zamin News Agency, September 4 In the city of Ahar [northwest Iran], a number of residents whose houses were razed according to a municipality plan, held protests in front of the city hall. Two years ago, the municipality had promised the residents of this area that it would provide them with new houses in place of demolished units. Strike for Unpaid Wages, Iran Zamin News Agency, September 5 In the city of Kazeroon [south Iran], the workers of Shiraz Ceramic Factory, whose wages have not been paid for the last four months, went on strike. No Tolerance for Criticism: Another Publication Under Attack, Radio France Internationale, September 4 Yesterday, the trial of the executive editor of Adineh publication began in Tehran. The Department for Assessment of Education sued the executive editor of Adineh, accusing him of publishing a falsified article. Adineh editor in his defense said that the article was written by one of the prominent and experienced professors of the nation. He added that the article was an expert's views in regards to some criticisms of the selection-process of students for colleges.... Israeli Jailed for Contact with Iranian Agent, Reuters, September 5 JERUSALEM - A Jerusalem court jailed an Israeli citizen on Thursday for three years for having made contact with an intelligence agent of arch-enemy Iran, the domestic Itim news agency said. Israel Radio said Herzl Rad had insisted he made the contact through the Iranian embassy in Turkey in March last year in a bid ultimately to persuade Israeli intelligence to take him into its ranks.... Itim said he was given a sentence of six years, three of them in jail. But the defendant, described by Israeli security officials as a 33-year-old clothing merchant of Iranian descent who lived in Jerusalem, told the radio after the sentencing: "I cannot say I'm satisfied." An indictment had originally accused Herzl Rad of spying. But the judges found him guilty only of illegal contact with a foreign agent. It said Iranian officials arranged his transport from Turkey to Iran where he was questioned by Iranian security officials and assigned to enter Israeli army installations and report back to a contact person in return for $10,000....
