The paper reported that this step is taken despite Iran's signing of the treaty banning production and buildup of poisonous gas and chemicals and is against Iran's commitments regarding nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Iran is a signatory of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty but is constantly trying to obtain nuclear capability. White House Mulls New Law's Impact on Iran Ties to S. Africa, Dow Jones News, September 10 The Clinton administration said it would examine business links between South Africa and Iran case-by-case before deciding whether the ties violate the new Iran/Libya sanctions law. "We would have to evaluate them on a case-by-case basis, but, in general, we don't look favorably on any kind of economic enhancement of the Tehran regime," an administration official said. Later this week, Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani will begin a state visit of South Africa with the aim of developing further economic links between the countries.... Among the proposals being considered is a joint venture to develop Iran's natural gas fields, and Iranian cooperation in developing South Africa's oil refining sector, according to both South African and Iranian officials. The U.S. is also watching plans by Iran to use huge South African oil storage tanks built by the apartheid government at Saldanha Bay to store up to 15 million barrels of crude oil. The oil could be released if Iran's normal oil export routes are cut off, and used by customers in both Africa and South America.... Seven People Arrested, Accused of Espionage, Radio Israel, September 9 An intelligence official of the Islamic government reported the arrest of seven people for what he described as espionage for foreign countries. According to the state run news agency, the head of Bushehr Province intelligence agency, Mr. Eslami, said that seven agents of foreigners, whom he said had transmitted military and economical information to foreigners, were arrested by regime's intelligence agents.... He did not provide any further information on the arrested individuals or the country for which they are accused of spying for. Tehran Regime Is In Turmoil, Iran Zamin News Agency, September 10 The British weekly The Observer reports that Iran, under the rule of the mullahs, is a country in turmoil in the internal arena. The weekly said that the regime's power base is weak and the system consists of extremist clerics and murderous members of the security services. The Observer added that the mullahs' regime is like a brief chapter in the history of Iran. Regime's Future Depends on Islamicization of The Universities — Khamenei, Tehran State Radio, September 9 In a meeting with his representatives in Iran's universities, Khamenei reiterated that Islamicization of the universities is an important issue which has many dimensions and the future of the revolution depends on it.... Khamenei described the philosophy of mullahs' presence in the universities as a fruitful necessity for the scientific centers.... He said that... in universities, the mullahs can satisfy the needs of the youth by guiding them and practicing psychological and spiritual medicine.
