Hollow show of amnesty does not change the fate of political prisoners

In a ridiculous maneuvering today, the regime's radio announced that Khamenei, the mullahs' leader, has granted amnesty or commuted the sentences of 1,050 prisoners.

This is not the first time the mullahs' regime is resorting to such theatrics to cover up the extensive violations of human rights and the torture of political prisoners in particular. Every year, either before or after any international condemnation, the regime resorts to such propaganda, disgraceful maneuvers which never beguile the Iranian people and Resistance and the international community.

Last week, the U.N. Human Rights Commission condemned the mullahs' regime for its flagrant violations of human rights in Iran and the assassination of dissidents abroad. It was the 37th such condemnation by a United Nations body.

At the same time, eye-witness reports from Iran indicate recommencement of group executions of political prisoners in recent days. The Iranian Resistance is extremely concerned about the situation of political prisoners in Iran.

The mullahs' regime has so far refrained from answering about the total number of political prisoners detained from day one and their number and conditions today. However, the mullahs' regime has refrained from allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit the political prisoners, despite its signed commitment to the U.N. General Assembly in 1990.

The Iranian Resistance again appeals to relevant international authorities and bodies for the rescue of Mehrdad Kavoussi who is in the danger of execution in the Khomeini regime's prisons. Mehrdad Kavoussi, a political refugee sympathizing with the Iranian Resistance, had fled to Turkey after ten years of imprisonment in the Khomeini regime's jails and was granted asylum by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. On April 25, however, the Turkish police extradited him back to Iran. The extradition was officially protested by the UNHCR.
