- People of Khorramshahr demonstrate in solidarity with Abadan uprising

Several districts of the southwestern Iranian city of Khorramshahr were the scenes of antigovernment demonstrations on Friday night by groups of young people, who were chanting slogans against the ruling mullahs and in solidarity with the bloody uprising in the neighboring port city of Abadan.

Special anti-riot forces, who have been on high alert throughout Khuzistan Province since the Abadan uprising began on Wednesday, attacked the protesters, beating up the young demonstrators with truncheons. As the demonstrators resisted and clashed with the security forces, clashes spread to other neighborhoods in the city.

The first demonstrations began at about 10 pm on Friday in Simetri district. Within an hour, similar protests broke out by young people in Taleghani Avenue, Sevom Khordad Street, and the cityÕs bazaar neighborhood.

Fearful of a repeat of the mass uprising in Abadan, senior commanders of the State Security Forces and Revolutionary Guards went to the scene of clashes to directly command their forcesÕ crackdown on protesters.
