12 prisoners escape from Iranshahr prison

Twelve prisoners escaped the main prison of Iranshahr, southeastern Iran, reports from Iran say. They did so after confiscating seven AK-47 automatic rifles and a Nissan patrol car. At least two were political prisoners.

A sentry guard helped them escape at 3:00 a.m. on June 24. Despite extensive mobilization of the Guards Corps and Bassij, authorities failed to recapture the prisoners.

Five of the prisoners had been condemned to death and others received long term prison sentences.
