Two-day demonstration in Mashhad's Ferdowsi University

Some 1,000 students of Ferdowsi University in Mashhad staged a demonstration on September 10 and 11 on campus, chanting anti-government slogans and urging the dismissal of Sarfarazi, the university's president, who actively participates in the suppression of students.

The demonstration was in protest to continued persecution and harassment of students by the security forces stationed on campus.

In the dormitories, the single and double bedrooms have been filled with three students to provide more space for security agents and Guards Corps students. Every year, the regime allocates 40% of the college admission capacity to the Guards Corps and other repressive organs.

In addition, the security forces have placed iron bars on all the windows of the dormitories to prevent the students from leaving their rooms at night and evade detection by the security forces. The action is also aimed to keep the Intelligence Ministry agents in control of the situation.

By calling in anti-riot units, the university officials quelled the demonstration by students who were protesting their de facto internment in the dormitories.

This is the 20th protest in the past year by students of Ferdowsi University which has led to extensive clashes between them and the security forces.
